29 Sep Apple and Blackberry Day
The Foundation children had a fabulous Apple and Blackberry Day children on Friday.
We are blessed with a wonderful orchard at Alphington School with a wide selection of different apples.
Over the course of the day, the children did a range of different activities, all involving some kind of apple treat! They were put into apple groups and each had a different apple sticker on them so they knew which type of apple they were, then they went through a carousel of activities to participate in.
Juicing:
We were kindly lent a real juicer and scratter from a local farmer to help juice our apples. The children did this brilliantly, they washed the apples, cut up the apples, mashed the apples, put the apples into the scary scratter and then pressed the apples to create the juice.
Obviously, the best bit was the drinking of the juice. It went down a treat!
Baking:
The children had to make Apple and Blackberry scones as we also have a lot of blackberry bushes on site so they followed the recipe instructions and got very messy and sticky rolling out the scone dough. They didn’t seem to mind when they got to taste yummy scones afterwards though.
Painting:
We had some amazing paintings produced from apple and blackberry day. I was so impressed by the skill involved, the different size of paintbrush used to create different effects. We also had some apple printing and some wonderful colourful pattern strips.
Tasting:
The children were introduced to a range of different type of apples, they had to taste them and communicate the different tastes. Miss Oakley encouraged the children to use descriptive language to describe the tastes.
Forest Folk:
At the end of the day, the parents were invited in to join in with the fun and experience a bit of Apple and Blackberry day for themselves. The parents were great in helping their child make an apple suncatchers and also were encouraged to drink some real apple juice and taste some apple and blackberry scones.
