Is there anybody out there?

Is there anybody out there?

This half term in Year 2 we are learning all about our solar system and asking the question, ‘Is anybody out there?’.

Our classroom has been transformed into a space travel agency where we will be able to sell holidays to our friends, persuading them to visit different planets in our solar system. We will also have a range of challenges to independently access when using this area to fully immerse ourselves in what lies beyond our planet!

As part of our ‘hook day’ we spent time finding out what it might be like to be an astronaut and have made dehydrated astronaut food and created artwork inspired by Peter Thorp.

Over the coming half term we will be continuing to explore our solar system by:

  • Creating rockets and writing instructions for how to make a rocket
  • Learning about the moon landings
  • Creating artwork inspired by our key text: Bob the man on the moon
  • Designing our own planets
  • Researching and writing about our solar system
  • Creating videos about our solar system

Key texts for the half term:

This half term we will be using two texts to develop our writing: Man on the moon by Simon Barton and Usborne: Look inside space.

Maths

In Maths this half term we will be focusing on developing strategies for addition and subtraction and using these to solve problems. The addition and subtraction calculations will require children to ‘re-group’ exchanging 10 ones for 1 group of ten as part of their calculations, please see the video below for more information:
